Project Description

The new services building for a Fortune 500 technology company’s corporate campus is an interactive, porous facility that promotes connection on multiple scales: it connects employees to services that support wellbeing; it connects employees to one another; and it brings together the existing buildings within the overall campus development. Intricately interwoven within the surrounding landscape, the building melds innovative workplace design with the benefits of being surrounded by nature. On the ground level, the dining center provides healthy eating options from around the world while also serving produce grown in the campus gardens. The great hall within the dining space is a transparent pavilion with direct connections to the outdoor dining terraces. This variety of indoor and outdoor seating configurations allow employees to take advantage of San Diego’s ideal climate. The conference center, which also opens directly to the courtyard, includes a 300-seat no-stage auditorium. The multi-function event space can be divided into three separate rooms for meetings or smaller events. The upper level of the building is accessible via a sloped green roof, which is available for outdoor classes from the adjacent fitness center. The design was inspired by the desire to make employees more creative and innovative while increasing their health and vitality. Several drivers were established to create a more productive workforce: providing employees with connections to nature through ample natural daylight, unobstructed views, natural ventilation, and a trail system connecting the adjacent Lopez Canyon. These workplace strategies create a richer social experience for more productive, meaningful interactions and provide the opportunity to engage with others through spatial organization.
